Allan, Frances

Laboratory, where he worked with John Longo and Allan Jacobson on the synthesis and characterization of mixed metal oxides and their application in heterogeneous catalysis. He joined the chemistry faculty of Northwestern University in 1984 where he is now Professor of Chemistry and an active member of the Center for Catalysis and Surface Science and the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center. Kenneth Poeppelmeier has published over 250 research papers and supervised approximately 40 Ph.D. students in the area of inorganic and solid state chemistry. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and has been a Lecturer for the National Science Council of Taiwan (1991), Natural Science Foundation of China (1999) and Chemistry Week in China (2004), and more recently an Institut Universitaire de France Professor (2003). 

Many critics have commented on the importance of this notion of affinity to quote but a few, Leon Lemonnier talks about the affinite de temperament avec l auteur interprete in his study of Les Traducteurs d Edgar Poe en France (1845-1875) (Paris PUF, 1928), p. 185. Paul Valery in his Situation de Baudelaire emphasizes the magique contact de deux esprits (p. 131, while P. M. Wetherill devotes a whole section of his Charles Baudelaire et la poesie d Edgar Allan Poe to affinities between the two writers.

And there were losses of other women whom Poe had loved, as well the death of surrogate mother Jane Stith Stanard in 1824, the termination of his romance with young Elmira Royster in 1826, the death of foster mother Frances Allan in 1829. Moreover, as he worked on The Raven, he may well have anticipated the death of his young, gentle, and idolized wife Virginia the onset of her tuberculosis occurred three years before the poem was published (and she died two years after it appeared). 

To that end, he becomes reconciled with John Allan, who helps him obtain the appointment. Frances Allan dies 2.8 February.
