Alkyl halides hydrolysis reactions

With enamines of cyclic ketones direct C alkylation occurs with allyl and propargyl as well as alkyl halides. The reaction is again sensitive to the polarity of the solvent (29). The pyrrolidine enamine of cyclohexanone on reaction with ethyl iodide in dioxane gave 25% of 2-ethylcyclohexanone on hydrolysis, while in chloroform the yield was increased to 32%. [Pg.121]

A more general method for preparation ofa-amino acids is the amidotnalmatesynthesis, a straightforward extension of the malonic ester synthesis (Section 22.7). The reaction begins with conversion of diethyl acetamidomalonate into an eno-late ion by treatment with base, followed by S 2 alkylation with a primary alkyl halide. Hydrolysis of both the amide protecting group and the esters occurs when the alkylated product is warmed with aqueous acid, and decarboxylation then takes place to vield an a-amino acid. For example aspartic acid can be prepared from, ethyl bromoacetate, BrCh CCHEt ... [Pg.1026]

Hydrolysis of alkyl halides (Section 8.1) A reaction useful only with substrates that do not undergo E2 elimination readily. It is rarely used for the synthesis of alcohols, since alkyl halides are normally prepared from alcohols. [Pg.626]

Chiral oxazolines developed by Albert I. Meyers and coworkers have been employed as activating groups and/or chiral auxiliaries in nucleophilic addition and substitution reactions that lead to the asymmetric construction of carbon-carbon bonds. For example, metalation of chiral oxazoline 1 followed by alkylation and hydrolysis affords enantioenriched carboxylic acid 2. Enantioenriched dihydronaphthalenes are produced via addition of alkyllithium reagents to 1-naphthyloxazoline 3 followed by alkylation of the resulting anion with an alkyl halide to give 4, which is subjected to reductive cleavage of the oxazoline moiety to yield aldehyde 5. Chiral oxazolines have also found numerous applications as ligands in asymmetric catalysis these applications have been recently reviewed, and are not discussed in this chapter. ... [Pg.237]

Dihydropyrans 88-90 are deprotonated at the vinylic position adjacent to oxygen by t-BuLi and the resulting anions add readily to alkyl halides, aldehydes, and ketones. Subsequent acid hydrolysis provides the products expected from reaction of an oj-functionalized pentanoyl anion 88 acts as HOCH2(CH2)3CO , 89 as 0CH(CH2)3C0 , and 90 as MeCO(CH2)3CO (77TL4187 81T3997). [Pg.101]

The (V-methyldihydrodithiazine 125 has also been used as an effective formyl anion equivalent for reaction with alkyl halides, aldehydes, and ketones (77JOC393). In this case there is exclusive alkylation between the two sulfur atoms, and hydrolysis to give the aldehyde products is considerably easier than for dithianes. However, attempts to achieve a second alkylation at C2 were unsuccessful, thus ruling out the use of this system as an acyl anion equivalent for synthesis of ketones. Despite this limitation, the compound has found some use in synthesis (82TL4995). [Pg.108]

Reaction of alkyl halides 1 with hexamethylenetetramine 2 (trivial name urotropine) followed by a hydrolysis step, leads to formation of primary amines 3 free of higher substituted amines. This method is called the Delepine reaction, a comparable method is the Gabriel synthesis. [Pg.83]

Secondary or tertiary alkyl halides are much less reactive. For example an alkyl dichloride with a primary and a secondary chloride substituent reacts selectively by exchange of the primary chloride. The reactivity with respect to the Finkelstein reaction is thus opposite to the reactivity for the hydrolysis of alkyl chlorides. For the Finkelstein reaction on secondary and tertiary substrates Lewis acids may be used," e.g. ZnCla, FeCls or MesAl. [Pg.113]

Carboxylic acids can be prepared from nitriles by reaction with hot aqueous acid or base by a mechanism that we ll see in Section 20.9. Since nitriles themselves are usually made by Sts 2 reaction of a primary or secondary7 alkyl halide with CN , the two-step sequence of cyanide displacement followed by nitiile hydrolysis is a good way to make a carboxylic acid from an alkyl halide (RBr —> RC=N RC02H). [Pg.762]
