Alkyl aryl sulphones (typical procedure). Method A. A solution of NajTe (prepared by heating a mixture of Te (0.13 g, 1 mmol), Rongalite (0.79 g, 5 mmol) and aqueous 1 M NaOH (15 mL)) is added dropwise to a stirred solution of TsCl (1 mmol) and BzEtjN+CF (0.022 g, 0.1 mmol) in THF (10 mL) at room temperature under Nj. An instantaneous reaction occurs and the colour of the mixture changes to deep black. After stirring for 5 min. [Pg.152]

Electrochemical reduction of aryl sulphones in methanol leads to cleavage of one carbon-sulphur bond in a two-electron process. Alkyl aryl sulphones with an electron donating substituent in the aryl ring give the arenesulphinic acid and an alkane [68, 69]. Methyl phenyl sulphone and alkyl aryl sulphones with an electron withdrawing substituent in the aryl ring are cleaved to the substituted arene and the alkylsulphinic acid [70], see Scheme 5.2. In addition, a bulky orfAo-substituent such as tert.-butyl favours cleavage to the arene and alkanesulphinic acid [71]. [Pg.171]

This product is the amine salt of an alkyl aryl sulphonate found to be extremely useful as an emulsifier, detergent and surfactant. Supplied at approximately a 60% active concentration, it is light amber viscous liquid. [Pg.289]

Here, the inner core of the particle comprises a polymer of controlled modulus, for example, a silicone rubber or a methacrylic-butadiene-styrene terpolymer. The outer shell of the particle contains reactive species that are so designed to react with the adhesive matrix being used. For example, the styrene-based core contains 1 to 2% of an alkyl aryl sulphonate as its outer shell. [Pg.558]

In the 1930s a number of long-all l-chain sulphonates (anionic chemicals), alkyl aryl sulphonates, and sulphates replaced the soaps. Unlike the sulphonates, sulphates are susceptible to hydrolysis, so that pH control is important for sulphate solutions. In dehydration applications the sulphonates exhibit fair to good wetting and water drop performance, some ability to brighten oil, and very little tendency to overtreat, particularly in high-gravity emulsions [1, 2],... [Pg.54]

With sulphonates, the sulphur atom is directly attached to the carbon atom of the alkyl group, giving the molecule stability against hydrolysis, when compared with the sulphates (whereby the sulphur atom is indirectly linked to the carbon of the hydrophobe via an oxygen atom). Alkyl aryl sulphonates are the most common... [Pg.6]

It is essential that the molecular weight of the alkyl-aryl sulphonate is known. This molecular weight can be ascertained by carrying out determinations on samples of known composition. [Pg.623]

Sulphonic acid esters Alkyl aryl sulphonic acid esters, such as ethyl p-toluene sulphonate, have two strong characteristic bands near 1350 cm ( 7.41 pm) and 1180cm ( 8.47pm) in their infrared spectra. Aryl esters of alkyl sulphonic acids normally have a strong absorption near 865-650cm (11.56-15.38pm) due to aromatic CH out-of-plane deformation vibrations and in this respect their spectra are similar to those of aryl sulphonamides but, of course, sulphonamides have additional bands due to their NH stretching vibrations. [Pg.276]
