Few studies of pure alkyl aryl sulfonate surfactants have appeared (8,11c,12). The interpretation of phase behavior and interfacial tension data for pure, single surfactants and well-defined surfactant mixtures is expected to be easier than for complex and poorly-defined mixtures. Fundamental studies on pure surfactants will shed light on the behavior of practically important surfactant systems which are impure. [Pg.43]

The saturated aqueous solution of surfactant at 25°C is in equilibrium with a liquid crystalline phase which contains about 25 wt% water. This phase dispersed in solution is the same as the phase formed by water vapor sorption into initially dry surfactant, according to nmr spectroscopy (which virtually eliminates the possibility, mentioned in the Introduction, of a complicating triple point in the two-component system). This hydrated liquid crystal is probably lamellar, to judge by the similarities in texture with lamellar liquid crystals of phospholipids and water (36). It is not uncommon for surfactants for form liquid crystalline phases by absorption of water, or hydrocarbon, or both (37). Moreover the true solubility of many other surfactants (particularly alkyl aryl sulfonates) in water, in salt water, and in hydrocarbon is small, sometimes as small as 0.003 wt% in water, below the Krafft point (38,39). For anionic surfactants colorimetric methods utilize the formation of an ion pair between the surfactant anion and a cationic dye. Similarly to two-phase titration, colorimetric determination is based on the fact that the ion pair is extractable into organic solvent, while the dye by itself is not. A characteristic example of the analysis of anionic surfactant is the determination of alkylsulfates and alkyl(aryl)sulfonates as their complex with methylene blue extracted into chloroform [31]. The absorbance of chloroform extract is measured at 625 nm versus chloroform background. This methods allows one to analyze alkylsulfates and alkyl(aryl)sulfonates separately. Alkylsulfates, in contrast to sulfonates, are easily hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid. The products of hydrolysis do not interact with methylene blue and are not transferred into chloroform. Some other cationic dyes, such as dimidium bromide, can also be used. In fact, the use of the latter allows one to achieve much higher sensitivity than that obtained with methylene blue. [Pg.153]

In dyeing, surfactants are used as wetting agents. They are also used in the formulation of disperse dyes. A stable suspension of the dye is prepared with the help of an anionic surfactant, such as alkyl or aryl alkyl sulfonate. It has been shown that dyeing takes place through the aqueous phase by the slow dissolution of the solid dye particles (61, 62).
