The bark of Phellodendron amurense (Rutaceae) is known as an important Japanese medicine for stomach and intestinal diseases. The bark is yellowish in color and contains two major alkaloids, berberine and palmatine. Yellow alkaloids do not usually have distinguishing characteristics in tissues when observed microscopically. The bark was soaked in 5% nitric acid solution for 3 days and sectioned for microscopical studies (1). The alkaloids were crystallized as nitrate salts in the phloem, medullary rays, and cortex. Crystals were removed by... [Pg.190]

Berberine (79, 103) occurs in the bark of a Rutaceae tree, Phellodendron amurense. Bark, 2-4 mm thick, can be ripped from the wood of an old tree. Cuttings of the bark are used as a crude drug in Chinese medicine as a bitter stomachic. Berberine is a quaternary base with a yellow color. The bark of R amurense is also yellow because of the presence of over 1% berberine. The alkaloid exhibits antibacterial activity. [Pg.218]

Henion et al. ° reported the first use of CE/ESEQIT to quantitatively determine the amounts of the isoquinoline alkaloids berberine and palmatine in the bark of Phellodendron wilsonii. Dried P. wilsonii tree bark is used in China and other countries to treat dysentery and jaundice. Relative migration times and ESI source CAD was used to identify these compounds. Signal-to-noise ratios greater than 10 were demonstrated for mass chromatograms of a synthetic mixture of these compounds at the 400- to 500-atmol level. At the picogram level, the calibration curves for berberine and palmatine were linear. Berberine and palmatine were determined in the bark at 13.95 pg/mg and 0.234 pg/mg, respectively. [Pg.327]
