Henion et al. ° reported the first use of CE/ESEQIT to quantitatively determine the amounts of the isoquinoline alkaloids berberine and palmatine in the bark of Phellodendron wilsonii. Dried P. wilsonii tree bark is used in China and other countries to treat dysentery and jaundice. Relative migration times and ESI source CAD was used to identify these compounds. Signal-to-noise ratios greater than 10 were demonstrated for mass chromatograms of a synthetic mixture of these compounds at the 400- to 500-atmol level. At the picogram level, the calibration curves for berberine and palmatine were linear. Berberine and palmatine were determined in the bark at 13.95 pg/mg and 0.234 pg/mg, respectively. [Pg.327]
