They reported that the hydrophilic constituents represented about 40% fulvic acid and can be resolved into at least six peaks, while the hydrophobic constituents represented about 30% and can be resolved into 12 peaks. The retention and LfV-Vis spectra of the resolved peaks were characteristic of aliphatic organic acids in the hydrophilic fraction and of conjugated aliphatic ketones and phenols in the hydrophobic fraction.

A recent alternative to HPLC or GC in the analysis of organic acids is capillary zone electrophoresis. It provides completely different selectivities from chromatographic methods, shorter analysis times, and no derivatization is required. As a drawback, the lack of UV absorbance of aliphatic organic acids above 220 nm requires the addition of substances showing strong UV absorption for indirect UV detection. 

Aliphatic organic acids are very widely distributed in living things, particularly in the form of fats, hence the name fatty acids . 

The focus of this chapter is on the analysis of short-chain aliphatic organic acids in aqueous matrices. The most prevalent organic adds discussed in this chapter are listed together with their pfCa values and structures in Table 15.1. Fatty acids that are longer chain organic acids are not included in this chapter since they are predominantly analyzed in biological specimen.
