Thin sheets of mica or polymer films, which are coated with silver on the back side, are adhered to two cylindrical quartz lenses using an adhesive. Filtering the tube suspension through a 0.2 xm pore ceramic paper leaves a uniform black deposit on the paper and can produce aligned CNT films [30]. The deposited material was transferred on a thin Teflon sheet by pressing the tube-coated side of the filter on the plastic and then the filter was lifted off to expose the surface. Another method to synthesize hollow nanocapsules involves the use of nanoparticle templates as the core, growing a shell around them, then subsequently removing the core by dissolution [30-32]. Although this approach is reminiscent of the sacrificial core method, the nanoparticles are first trapped and aligned in membrane pores by vacuum filtration rather than coated while in aqueous solution. Next, we coated the heating plates with graphite from a number two pencil and smoothed it out with a Q-tip to make a release and contamination shield layer. The three layers (catalyst-PEM-catalyst) of the sandwich were then set on top of the lower heating plate. After carefully aligning the layers, so that the smaller catalyst disks were centered above and below the larger PEM disk, the upper heating plate was placed on top of the sandwich. The heater plates were opened, and the finished fuel cell sandwich was removed using the special tweezers. We noted that the PEM disk was no longer round, but instead somewhat elliptical. This may be due to alignment of the film molecules in one preferential direction. The particular colors that are observed at different angles will depend critically on the thickness of the thin film coating. Precision instrumentation is required to carefully control film thickness during production.
