Albuterol adverse effects

Patients receiving these agents may notice improvement in 1 to 2 weeks, but maximal benefit may not be seen for 4 to 6 weeks. Cromolyn and nedocromil appear to be similar in efficacy to the leukotriene antagonists and theophylline for persistent asthma.18 Both agents are well tolerated with adverse effects limited to cough and wheezing. Bad taste and headache have also been reported with nedocromil. One dose of cromolyn or nedocromil prior to exercise or allergen exposure will provide effective prophylaxis for 1 to 2 hours. Cromolyn and nedocromil are not as effective as albuterol for prophylaxis of exercise-induced asthma. [Pg.222]

Albuterol is the preferred bronchodilator for treatment of acute exacerbations because of its rapid onset of action. Ipratropium can be added to allow for lower doses of albuterol, thus reducing dose-dependent adverse effects such as tachycardia and tremor. Delivery can be through metered-dose inhaler (MDI) and spacer or nebulizer. The nebulizer route is preferred in patients with severe dyspnea and/or cough that would limit delivery of medication through an MDI with spacer. If response is inadequate, theophylline can be considered however, clinical evidence supporting its use is lacking. [Pg.240]

One of the most important uses of sympathomimetic drugs is in the therapy of bronchial asthma. This use is discussed in Chapter 20. Nonselective drugs (epinephrine), -selective agents (isoproterenol), and B2-selective agents (albuterol, metaproterenol, terbutaline) all are available for this indication. Sympathomimetics other than the 32-selective drugs are now rarely used because they are likely to have more adverse effects than the selective drugs. [Pg.190]

Albuterol and terbutaline are also available in tablet form. One tablet two or three times daily is the usual regimen the principal adverse effects of skeletal muscle tremor, nervousness, and occasional weakness may be reduced by starting the patient on halfstrength tablets for the first 2 weeks of therapy. This route of administration presents no advantage over inhaled treatment and is thus rarely prescribed. [Pg.432]

DD is a 70-year-old woman admitted to the hospital for exacerbation of her COPD. She is currently intubated and receiving high-dose albuterol therapy by continuous nebulization. Which of the following adverse effects may be associated with this treatment ... [Pg.72]

Pirbuterol is the pyridine isostere of albuterol. It has pharmacokinetics similar to albuterol but is half as potent at the p2-receptor. Pirbuterol is only available as an inhaler, whereas albuterol comes in tablet, syrup, solution, and aerosol formulations. Adverse effects of pirbuterol are nervousness, tremor, and headache, which is less than the profile for albuterol, which adds nausea, vomiting, dizziness, hypertension, insomnia, tachycardia, and palpitations. [Pg.1938]

Information for Patients The action of albuterol tablets may last up to 8 hours or longer. Albuterol tablets should not be taken more frequently than recommended. Do not increase the dose or frequency of albuterol tablets without consulting your physician. If you find that treatment with albuterol tablets becomes less effective for symptomatic relief, your symptoms get worse, and/or you need to take the product more frequently than usual, you should seek medical attention immediately. While you are taking albuterol tablets, other asthma medications and inhaled drugs should be taken only as directed by your physician. Common adverse effects include palpitations, chest pain, rapid heart rate, and tremor or nervousness. If you are pregnant or nursing, contact your physician about use of albuterol tablets. Effective and safe use of albuterol tablets includes an understanding of the way that it should be administered. [Pg.62]
