Albumin/globulin ratio

The rabbits had no abnormality clearly attributable to II other than purulent, Indurative myositis at the site of Injection In nine of 10 animals. Inasmuch as the solutions injected were not stated to have been sterilized, the myositis is not astonishing. The stomachs of the three dogs all had fibrosed mucous membranes at the cardiac and/or pyloric regions. The plasmas of these dogs had subnormal concentrations of albumin and total protein and low albumin globulin ratios. 

Blood chemistry. Pretest, and at least prior to termination, electrolytes and electrolyte balance, acid-base balance, glucose, urea nitrogen, serum lipids, serum proteins (albumin-globulin ratio), enzymes indicative of organ damage such as transaminases and phosphatases should be measured. Toxicant and metabolite levels should be assessed as needed.

A total protein method is available which employs an adaptation of the conventional biuret color development. The albumin/globulin ratio may also be determined by determination of albumin using the anionic dye, 2-(4 -hydroxybenzeneazo) benzoic acid.

In rats administered alkaloids derived from Russian comfrey, a dose of 71 mg/kg administered intraperitoneally three times per week resulted in severely impaired liver function and death within 3 to 4 weeks. Plasma protein and the albumin/globulin ratio were reduced by 40% or more, with only small increases in liver enzymes (Culvenor et al. 1980). 

Apparently damage of the capillaries in the affected areas is the primary cause of the exudation. If the development of exudate was merely a consequence of lowered colloid osmotic pressure in the plasma, the exudate fluid would be much lower in protein content. In encephalomalacia the albumin globulin ratio of the plasma remains normal after the onset of the disease.

It is now apparent from electrophoresis and ultracentrifuge measurements, correlated with separation by neutral salts (167, 208, 209, 210, 211), that the latter are incapable by any known means of accurately fractionating protein mixtures without complicating the operations to a point at which they are of little use as practical analytical procedures. Thus, Dole (212) found that the albumin-globulin ratio measured electrophoretically was about 2/3 of the ratio fotmd by chemical fractionation, an observation which was also checked by Pillemer and Hutchinson (196) by use of a methanol fractionation which was checked against electrophoresis. 

Relative lymphocytosis is not infrequently found in older children and in adults living in the types of environment that apparently favor the production of an inverted albumin-globulin ratio. To suggest a connection between the two is at present pure speculation, but here is a field of research worth exploring. 

The hypocupremia in nephrosis where the albumin globulin ratio is reversed and total protein levels are low remains to be explained. In these cases, however, there is a considerable loss by kidney excretion, as has been described by Markowitz et al. (1955). The ceruloplasmin excretion has been determined in 4 of his 7 nephrosis patients. The loss proved to be as high as 46-75 mg. ceruloplasmin a day. The serum copper values of these 7 patients were between 36 and 129 fig. %, with corresponding decreases in ceruloplasmin values. 

Something is known as to the results of necrosis of tissue in geneniJ, such as the elevated cholesterol and lipid levels, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and shifts in the serum proteins such as the increase of the globulin and fibrinogen content and a decrease of the albumin globulin ratio.
