In 1969 Schwartz (S29) described an Albanian family of two children with mild j8-thalassemia major. Their mother had a classical j8-thalassemia heterozygosity, but the father had a normal red cell morphology and normal levels of Hb-A, and Hb-F. The synthesis of /8 chains in this individual was impaired, although to a lesser extent than is usually observed in the classical jS-thalassemia. Interaction of this type of j8-thalassemia with the classical type results in a thalassemia major of reduced severity because the apparent homozygous children from this marriage are only mildly affected with levels of Hb-F of less than 12%. 

Variations in use between ethnic groups have also been reported within CEECs. In the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, for example, 1998 data show that young Macedonians tend to inject heroin whereas ethnic Albanians are more likely to smoke it. Similar differences have been reported with the Russian ethnic minority in the Baltic States and with the Roma community in Bulgaria.

Kosovo was subjected to the unilateral abolition of its federal status from 1987 onwards. It was submerged within Serbia, which launched a campaign of considerable repression against its majority ethnic Albanian population. Nevertheless, Kosovo claimed that its original status was distinguishable from that of constituent republics in name only. If they could leave, so should Kosovo. 

However, autonomy was negotiated successfully in Eastern Europe, in particular in relation to the Ukraine (Crimea) and Moldova (Gagauzia). Enhanced local self-government was also deployed as a substitute for formal autonomy in the Ohrid Framework Agreement addressing the Republic of Macedonia, adopted in the wake of the 2001 conflict with ethnic Albanian armed groups." ...
