With the pyrolysis furnace, proper operation essentially consists of controlling the rotary grate, the partial combustion air supply rate and the steam injection rate only — the required number of controls thus being definitely less than with the stocker-type incinerator the working mechanism of the furnace is also extremely simple. 

For the downhole gas heater to function normally, it must be kept on a stable operating regime which includes also a steady air supply. Because of the decrease in the air intake capacity of the well, it became necessary to increase the air injection pressure, so that the air supply rate to the gas heater could be maintained at the rate of about 12,000 mVday. Well head pressure was thus gradually increased to 33 kg/cm, the maximum the compressor station could produce. 

Apparatus. Figure 1 represents the mixture olfactometer used in the study. The apparatus consists of 16 stimuli mixing manifolds. Air at 0.5 L/min to each manifold is supplied through stainless steel capillary tubings from the air distributor manifold the 17th capillary branch serves to monitor the air supply rate. 

The specific air supply rate is likewise graduated from the highest value in the first compartment (about 750Nm /hour per plate) to lOONm /hour per plate in the last compartment. 

In some instances the first compartment is divided longitudinally instead of transversely, with different air supply rates to the two longitudinal sub-compartments, an arrangement which is considered to counteract the tendency for the clinker to segregate into coarser and finer particles. In practice this has not proved to be a satisfactory solution, however, because it is not possible to form a sufficiently effective air seal between the two sub-compartments. 

The specific air supply rate (m of air per minute and per m of aerated silo bottom area) will depend on the ease with which the material can be fluidized. For normal raw meal the required specific air rate is about 1 m /m minute, with air supplied at a pressure of 2-3 bar. 

Small fuel cell stacks can operate on either diffused or forced reactant air. Diffused-air stacks are generally limited in their applicability because of air supply rate issues and their impact on geometry the requisite openness of the air compartments in such devices also tends to render them vulnerable to atmospheric conditions. Hence, diffused-air (static) fuel cells are usually practical only in certain particularly low-power applications, up to perhaps 25 Watts. ...
