Two studies have suggested that quackgrass (Agropyron repens L.) can reduce K uptake by maize (Zea mays L.) plants. Bandeen and Buchholtz (11) found that K+, but not N or P0, content of corn was decreased by quackgrass growing with maize. Because high levels of fertilization did not overcome the effect of quackgrass, the authors concluded that competition was not responsible (11, 12).
