Whereas the anaerobic degradation of pyrimidines and pnrines has been extensively examined in a range of organisms, particnlarly in species of Clostridia, aerobic degradation has been stndied less often. The aerobic metabolism of nric acid (2,6,8-trihydroxypnrine) has been examined in pseudomonads and degradation has been shown to occnr by alternative pathways ... 

However, the many pathways by which MTBE and other oxygenates may be biodegraded anaerobically have been the subject of recent research and ongoing studies. Table 24.12 highlights the various electron acceptors that are used in anaerobic bioremediation studies and contrasts the products of complete anaerobic degradation with those for aerobic metabolism. 

The most broadly studied organic nitrogen compound is probably quinoline however, most studies report biodegradation. As we have seen from Table 14, quinoline is representative of the organonitrogen compounds present in the diesel cut. Its transformation has been studied in both, anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Several metabolic pathways have been proposed to explain the aerobic transformations however, no pathway has been proposed for quinoline metabolism under anaerobic conditions. 

In summary, two general pathways are now accepted as the reaction basis of pyridine degradation by bacteria. One involves (i) hydroxylation reactions, followed by reduction, e.g., on Bacillus strain 4 and the other (ii) (aerobic) reductive pathway(s) not initiated by hydroxylations, e.g., on Nocardia strain Zl [348], Two review articles, one by Kaiser [320] and the other by Fetzner [326] gave the complete microbial metabolic pathways for several nitrogen compounds carried out in the presence of a variety of microorganisms, some of them previously studied by Professor Lingens [349], The complete degradation pathways of pyridine are shown in Fig. 29. 

In contrast, Meckenstock et al. [280] reported larger isotopic enrichments in residual toluene, 3-6%o and up to 10%o during anaerobic and aerobic biodegradation experiments, respectively. These results indicated that isotopic fractionation effects may be different for different compounds, terminal electron-accepting processes (TEAP), degradative metabolic pathways, or microbial populations. 

Phytohormones such as ethylene, salicylic acid (SA), JA, and abscisic acid (ABA) regulate responses of plants to stresses via action referred as signaling crosstalk. Moreover, reactive oxygen species (ROS), the toxic byproducts of aerobic metabolism, play the important role of signaling molecules. Usually, the defensive responses of plants depend on the interaction (positive or negative) between phytohormone signaling pathways rather than on the independent contribution of each of them.
