Adhesive intumescent

The formation of borophosphate partially explains the good performance when APP and boric acid are mixed together in the epoxy resin. Indeed, in that case good mechanical resistance of the intumescent char is observed as borophosphate is a hard material, which also shows a good thermal stability. As a conclusion, the boron containing compounds provide the good structural properties of the char, whereas the phosphorus ensures the adhesion of the char to the steel.

Extensive adhesive testing has been reported for a variety of systems aimed at widely different bonding applications. Aircraft is represented with numerous studies of which selected references are representative for nitrile rubber modified adhesive systems (54-56). As noted above, intumescent coatings should have good adhesion to the protected material therefore, the studies on the influence of PEDA content on the adhesion strength of the coatings based on PVC resin to the fiberglass plastics were carried out while researching. The test results are illustrated by Fig. 18.3. 

Moreover, intumescent char adhesion to the surface of the burning polymer prevents molten inflamed polymeric particles from dripping, thus avoiding a source of fire propagation which is typical of some materials.
