The applications of hexagonal boron nitride form an important market, mostly as powder for lubricants and additives. Many of these applications are produced by CVD. [Pg.273]

There is a great deal of potential interest in borazine as a precursor of boron nitride, since it offers the advantages of being a single source of boron and nitrogen with the correct B/N ratio and a high ceramic yield. In addition, borazine contains the elementary BN building block as its substituted derivatives. This is described later. [Pg.168]

The c-BN phase was first obtained in 1957 [525] by exposing hexagonal boron nitride phase (h-BN) to high pressures and low temperatures. A pressure of more than 11 GPa is necessary to induce the hexagonal to cubic transformation, and these experimental conditions prevent any practical application for industrial purposes. Subsequently, it has been found that the transition pressure can be reduced to approximately 5 GPa at very high temperature (1300-1800°C) by using catalysts such as alkali metals, alkali metal nitrides, and Fe-Al or Ag-Cd alloys [526-528]. In addition, water, urea, and boric acid have been successfully used for synthesis of cubic boron nitride from hexagonal phase at 5-6 GPa and temperature above 800-1000°C [529]. It has been... [Pg.215]

A sacrificial carrier polymer approach was reported by Sneddon in 1988.64 Here, an organic polymer with a pentaborane side group was prepared by addition polymerization as shown in reaction (18). Treatment of this polymer with ammonia converted the borane side group to a fused borazine (naphthalene-type) side unit. Subsequent pyrolysis in ammonia resulted in loss of the organic polymer and hydrogen and the formation of boron nitride. [Pg.328]

Metals and ceramics (claylike materials) are also used as matrices in advanced composites. In most cases, metal matrix composites consist of aluminum, magnesium, copper, or titanium alloys of these metals or intermetallic compounds, such as TiAl and NiAl. The reinforcement is usually a ceramic material such as boron carbide (B4C), silicon carbide (SiC), aluminum oxide (A1203), aluminum nitride (AlN), or boron nitride (BN). Metals have also been used as reinforcements in metal matrices. For example, the physical characteristics of some types of steel have been improved by the addition of aluminum fibers. The reinforcement is usually added in the form of particles, whiskers, plates, or fibers. [Pg.31]

The list in Table 3 is not exhaustive other typical window materials include Mylar , boron nitride, Teflon , and aluminum. Each of these materials can be modified for additional chemical resistance. For example, Kapton film can be purchased coated with graphite or Teflon , and beryllium windows can be coated with DuraCoat . There is no one window material that is suitable for all applications. The optimum choice... [Pg.371]

Many other substances have been tested for use as additives for molybdenum disulphide films, including silver, tin, lead, lead oxide, bismuth trioxide and boron nitride , alumina, arsenic oxide, cadmium oxide, cuprous oxide, molybdic oxide. [Pg.106]
