We thank John Olsen of the Department of Anthropology, University of Arizona, and Professor Wu of the Institute for Vertebrate Paleontology, Beijing, for the Zhoukoudian bone samples. We thank Sandy Olsen of the Institute of Archaeology, London, and Lech Kaminski-Robins for the other bone samples, and Stuart Adams for the IR spectra. The ESR measurements were performed by the University of London Intercollegiate Research Service. [Pg.360]

Thus the very extensive data of Plum and Hansen (1960) indicate that heavily myelinated areas of human brain contain large amounts of cholesterol (4.2 gm/100 gm), while areas with fewer myelinated tracts contain much less of the sterol (0.7 gm/100 gm). Similarly, analysis of minute areas of subjacent white matter and the molecular layer from monkey cerebellar cortex again shows that cholesterol is concentrated in the former (Robins et al., 1956). More specific localization of cholesterol by histochemical means (Adams, 1961, 1962) indicates a strong reaction in the myelin sheath of peripheral nerve and in fiber tracts of the brain (Fig. 3). However, the most convincing evidence for the chemical composition of myelin has only recently become available. Methods using... [Pg.177]

Several chapters rely on different qnalitative observation and analysis methods. Robin Adams and Tiago Forin, writing from an edncation and learning science perspective, use phenomenography to investigate the differences and similarities in the way... [Pg.33]
