Acyl taurates

Chemistry and general properties. Taurine is amino ethane sulphonic acid, and although it is possible to prepare true acyl taurates, superior performance is obtained by using N-methyl taurine (see Figure 4.27). Taurate in this section is used to mean the N-methyl derivative, as is common in industry. [Pg.130]

In principle a large number of sulphonated amide surfactants can exist, but only acyl taurates and methyltaurates and sulphosuccinamates are of practical interest. [Pg.139]

The molecular weight of the fatty acid may be determined by titration or gas chromatography. Its iodine value may also be determined, since acyl taurates and methyltaurates are often oleic acid derivatives. [Pg.140]

The titration in acid solution measures acyl taurates or methyltaurates. The titration in alkaline solution measures the same actives plus soap. [Pg.141]

Studies performed by MS on cosmetic products demonstrate the utility of this technique for analysis of hair-care surfactants. After sample pretreatment for the separation of different kinds of surfactant, the usual identification of anionic surfactant such as AE, AES, and less common surfactants (lauryl sulfosuccinate, N-acyl-N-methyl taurate, paraffin sulfonate) is possible. Amphoteric surfactants (cocoamido-propylbetaine) and those present less frequently (lauryl hydroxysultaine) have been identified by this technique as well. For other kinds of components... [Pg.4719]

Another group of the few sulfonates based on RR are the ->acyl amino alkanesulfonates (taurates) and the - acyloxy alkane sulfonates (isethionates). - Lignosulfonate is also a sulfonate based on natural feedstock. [Pg.295]

These are named as derivatives of taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) and are also called taurides. The typical synthetic route involves reaction of sodium bisulfite and ethylene oxide to form sodium isethionate, reaction of the isethionate with methylamine to form sodium iV-methyltaurate, then subsequent reaction with the acyl chloride of a fatty acid to give the iV-acyl-Al-methyltaurate. Taurates have good tolerance to water hardness and find specialty applications in textiles and in detergent bars and shampoos. Taurates are sometimes classified as amphoteric surfactants. [Pg.10]
