A typical active matrix thin film transistor (AM-TFT) backplane contains one transistor per pixel in a structure having four to six separate layers composed of conductors, dielectrics, and semiconductors. The TFT works as a switch with the on and off states controlling when each pixel can be addressed. Each pixel is connected to the other through the addressing lines, gate line, and data line. The gate lines turn the TFT on or off while the data (image to be displayed) are transmitted by the data... [Pg.427]

Thin film transistors (TFTs) based systems are much better for colour displays since they give better viewing angles, response times and resolution than STNs. Those systems in which an array of amorphous siUcon transistors is vapour-deposited onto one side of the substrate, each transistor being positioned below each pixel, are known as active matrix TFT (AMTFT) displays. [Pg.308]

Active-matrix displays differ from the aforementioned displays in that they have a switch incorporated into each pixel (Tsukada 2000). This removes the limitations encountered in passive matrix displays but requires more sophisticated processing equipment to be used. The dominant pixel switch technology is the amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (TFT) on glass (Tsukada 2000), although other technology... [Pg.345]

For high information-content displays, active-matrix (AM) pixel addressing provides improved display performance and reduced power consumption. In active matrix addressing each individual pixel is controlled by one or more thin-film transistors (TFTs). To date, most AM OLED displays have used polysilicon TFTs as the active elements, because they can provide sufficient current at low voltages and acceptable device dimensions, and they are capable of integrated drive electronics... [Pg.367]
