Mechanical strain of Pd and Pt has been observed [278] to give rise to overpotential variations. Such an effect has been studied to gain insight into the factors responsible for the relationship between surface modifications and electrocatalytic activity. The analysis has shown that, of the various factors scrutinized including the possible variation in the interatomic distance, the most probable one is a change in ionic specific adsorption. [Pg.25]

Conversely, processes which convert carbons to sfp- carbons are more favorable for five-membered than for six-membered rings. This can be illustrated by the data for acetolysis of cyclopentyl versus cyclohexyl tosylate. The former proceeds with an enthalpy of activation about 3kcal/mol less than the latter." A molecular mechanics analysis found that the difference was largely accounted for by the relief of torsional strain in the cyclopentyl case." Notice that there is an angle-strain effect which is operating in the opposite direction, since there will be some resistance to the expansion of the bond angle at the reaction center to 120° in the cyclopentyl ring. [Pg.172]

The crossed polarizer effects of both types are used in analysis work. The concentration of optically active organic materials is determined by the degree of rotation. In plastic processing the residual strains in molded materials as well as the degree of orientation of polymers is determined by the effect on polarized light. Crossed polarizers are used with special wave plates to control the amount of light that passes through an optical system. [Pg.235]

The deletion of pelX and of the five major pel genes from the E. chrysanthemi chromosome failed to totally eliminate the capadty for tissue maceration (16). Analysis of the macerated tissue by electrofocusing followed by an activity detection, revealed the presence of a new set of pectate lyases (up to 5 forms). Because of their low activity in synthetic medium, they were described as secondary pectinases. The gene of one secondary endo-pectate lyases, PelL, has been characterized in two E. chrysanthemi strains. The pelL gene of E. [Pg.315]

From these results it was concluded that the DNS method can be used as a method to optimize and follow the production-process of RGase by the wild strain. Dionex analysis is a technique which provides us to control the production of the ri t enzyme but does not give any indication about activity. [Pg.492]
