Thermoplastic acrylics are used extensively in aerosol lacquers, both as solid colours and metallics, in touch up automotive refinish applications. Due to their excellent colour, colour retention, rapid drying, relative inertness to metallic and fluorescent pigments, and exterior durability, they are also used for small household jobs such as repainting furniture (chairs, stools), metal coatings, marking paints etc. [Pg.190]

Whereas the eadiest fluorescent-dye pigments would last only 20 days outdoors in a screen-ink film, fade resistance has been improved to such an extent that some modem daylight-fluorescent coated panels stiU have useful color after nine months or mote in Florida sunlight in a 45° exposure tack facing south. The fluorescent layer is usually coated with an acrylic film containing a uv absorber. Indoor-accelerated exposure equipment is, of course, invaluable in the development of such systems. Better dyes and resins very likely will make possible fat mote stable coatings in the future. [Pg.300]

In the following review there are six technical sections, the first three covering dyes. The division has been made on the basis of the nature of the electronic character of the dye molecule. Anionic dyes are applied to hydrophilic fibres whilst cationic dyes are applied mainly to acrylic fibres. The neutral disperse dyes are used mainly on the hydrophobic polyester fabrics. Then follow sections covering pigments, a short summary of fluorescent brightening agents and, finally, an introduction to the subject of colour and chemical constitution. [Pg.318]

Vinyl lacquers are used mainly where a high degree of chemical resistance is required these lacquers are based on vinyl chlorides and vinyl acetates. Acrylic lacquers are based on methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate polymers and copolymers. Other esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid also may be used to make nonconvertible film formers. Judicious selection of these acrylic acid or methacrylic acid esters allows one to produce film formers with specifically designed properties such as hardness, flexibility, gloss, durability, heat, and chemical resistance. Acrylic lacquers, however, are not noted for their water resistance. The principal uses of acrylic-type lacquers are fluorescent and metallic paints, car refinish applications, clear lacquers and sealers for metals, and protective coatings for aircraft components and for vacuum-deposited metals, as well as uses in pigmented coatings for cabinets and appliances. [Pg.1309]
