Acquired engineering

As a solution. Chap. 13 and 14 explore the use of Model-Driven Engineering techniques, in particular SysML and SysMLAMechatronics, as a front-end to acquire engineering models. These models are then translated into ontologies, on which reasoning is performed. 

Construction of expert systems is facilitated if it is possible (at least approximately) to describe (model) expected signal from defect and non-defect pieces. If no models for the problem are available then the knowledge about the problem has to be acquired from an expert (the NDT inspector). However, the knowledge possessed by the expert is often incomplete and not well formalised, which makes knowledge acquisition a difficult task for the knowledge engineer. 

This section examines and reviews some of the basic principles diat engineers and sciendsts employ in performing design calculations mid predicting die performance of plant equipment. Topics include die tlicrmochemistry, chemical reacdon equilibrimii, chemical kinedcs, die ideal gas law, pardal pressure, pliase equilibrimii, and die Reynolds Number. These basic principles will assist die reader in acquiring a better miderslmidiiig of some of the material diat appears later in die book. 

Efficiency became the watchword after deregulation. With competition opened up to all comers, the airlines fought hard to make money by cutting costs and increasing productivity. Coupled with an unexpected crisis in the supply of fuel in 1979, there was an industrywide effort to acquire the latest, most efficient equipment using the latest engine technology.

During this training, an engineer surveyor can expect to be shown examples of the defects that he is likely to encounter. Many inspecting authorities have a black museum of such defects or they are described and illustrated by photographs in the training literature. He will also be instructed, both in the classroom and on-site, about locations where defects are likely to occur. Most surveyors develop an instinct , which helps them to find defects, and this can only be acquired through practical experience of different types of plant. 

Special efforts to help academic institutions acquire these instruments are needed. Future chemical engineers will be required to understand the design and operation of sophisticated equipment in the analysis of materials properties. An early exposure to these techniques is highly desirable, and is probably indispensable to quality research at the graduate level. 

The committee estimates that, in a given year, somewhere between 10 and 25 of the active groups in surface and interfacial engineering will need to acquire a major instrument for adaptation and use. A funding level of 5 million per year for major dedicated instrumentation can meet most of these needs.
