Acids and Bases An Introduction

All aqueous solutions contain hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH ). An addle solution cx)ntains more ions than OH ions, whereas a basic solution contains mote OH ions than H+ ions. A neutral solution contains equal concentrations of H+ ions and OH ions. A hydronium ion (H3O+) is a hydrated hydrogen ion. The symbols and H3O+ can be used interchangeably in chemical equations. [Pg.189]

Identify the conjugate acid-base pairs in this reaction. [Pg.189]

A hydrogen ion is donated by HCIO2, which is the Brpnsted-Lowry acid in the forward reaction. The resulting conjugate base is C102. The base in the forward reaction is H2O, which accepts a hydrogen ion to form the conjugate acid HjO.  [Pg.189]

Solving Problems A Chemistry Handbook Chemistry Matter and Change 189 [Pg.189]

The blue litmus paper turned pink when it was dipped into the HCI solution, confirming that HCI is an acid. The red litmus paper turned blue after being dipped into the NaOH solution, so NaOH is a base. [Pg.596]

Acids can also be identified by their reaction with some metals. Aluminum, magnesium, and zinc react with aqueous solutions of acids to produce hydrogen gas. The reaction between zinc and hydrochloric acid is described by the following equation. [Pg.596]

Geologists identify rocks as limestone (CaC03) by using an HCI solution. If a few drops of the acid produce bubbles of carbon dioxide, the rock is limestone. [Pg.596]

For more practice writing equations for acid reactions, go to Supplemental Practice Problems in Appendix A. [Pg.596]

Write a balanced formula equation for the reaction that occurs between each of the following pairs of reactants. [Pg.596]
