Acid From alcohol

The classification is unaffected by allylic, vinylic, or acetylenic unsaturation appearing in both starting material and product, or by increases or decreases in the length of carbon chains for example, the reactions f-BuOH f-BuCOOH, PhCHgOH - PhCOOH, and PhCH=CHCH20H -PhCH=CHCOOH would all be considered as preparations of carboxylic acids from alcohols. Conjugate reduction and alkylation of unsaturated... [Pg.15]

Photocatalytic oxidation is a novel approach for the selective synthesis of aldehyde and acid from alcohol because the synthesis reaction can take place at mild conditions. These reactions are characterized by the transfer of light-induced charge carriers (i.e., photogenerated electron and hole pairs) to the electron donors and acceptors adsorbed on the semiconductor catalyst surface (1-4). Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a useful technique for determining the dynamic behavior of adsorbed species and photogenerated electrons (5-7). [Pg.463]

The photocatalytic oxidation of alcohols constitutes a novel approach for the synthesis of aldehydes and acid from alcohols. Modification of Ti02 catalyst with Pt and Nafion could block the catalyst active sites for the oxidation of ethanol to CO2. Incorporation of Pt resulted in enhanced selectivity towards formate (HCOO ad)-Blocking of active sites by Nafion resulted in formation of significantly smaller amounts of intermediate species, CO2 and H2O, and accumulation of photogenerated electrons. The IR experimental teclmique has been extended to Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR), enabling the study of liquid phase photocatalytic systems. [Pg.471]

The conversion of ethyl alcohol by way of acetaldehyde into acetic acid is the chemical expression equivalent to acetic fermentation. In this process the acetic bacteria utilise atmospheric oxygen in order to bind the hydrogen. That the hydrogen which has to be removed is activated, and not the oxygen (as was formerly thought), is shown by experiments in which oxygen is eaxluded and replaced by quinone the bacteria produce acetic acid from alcohol as before and the quinone is reduced to hydroquinone. [Pg.212]

Strong oxidising agents such as acidified potassium permanganate are used for getting carbo Qrlic acids from alcohols directly. CrOs in anhydrous medium is used as the oxidising agent for the isolation of aldehydes. [Pg.63]

In the last chapter, you saw alkenes being made qh dehydration El elimination in acid from alcohols by El elimination—dehydration—under acid catalysis. The question we are going to answer in this section is how can you make this elimination run backwards—in other words, how can you hydrate a double bond ... [Pg.518]

Di-feri-butyl dicarbonate (B0C2O, 6) has mainly been used for the introduction of the Boc group into amino functions however, it has recently been used for the preparation of esters of N-protected amino acids from alcohols,as well as for the esterification of Fmoc amino acids with Wang resins,P l and protected Asp and Glu through the co-carboxylic acid to HO-CH2-PSty.P ]... [Pg.714]

Not very many other chromium compounds are suitable for the preparation of carboxylic acids from alcohols. One such compound is zinc dichromate, which oxidizes benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid in 90% yield in dichloromethane solution at room temperature [660]. [Pg.128]

One example is to separate mono- and dicarboxylic acids from alcohols and carbohydrates using a cation resin in the H form with sulfuric acid as the eluate. Strong acids are highly ionized and elute at the void volume of the column, whereas the nonionic alcohols and carbohydrates, which are completely protonated, are neutral and enter the resin. They generally emerge from the resin in the order of the smallest molecule first. [Pg.292]
