After the chemical revolution, sedative salt came to be regarded as an acidic oxide, boric (or boracic) acid. Even at the close of the eighteenth century, its chemical nature was not understood. In a letter to the Annales de Chimie et de F ysiqtie, A. N. Scherer wrote in 1799 I have just been assured that Crell has recognized carbon as the radical of boracic acid (67).

The most important monobasic oxygen acids, of inorganic nature, are the following—sulphuric, sulphurous, nitric, hj pe-chlorous, chloric, perchloric, iomc, phosphoric, arsenic, arsenious, chromic, boracic, silicic, and carbonic acids, the salts of which are now to be very briefly described. The salts formed by the monobasic hydrogen acids with simple radicals have been already described, under the respective metals, as chlorides, bromides, iodides, fluorides, sulphurets, c. 

Hode of Preparation.—Jets of steam (Jvmerolles or suf-Jioni) charged with boracic acid, HBOg, which issue from the earth in Tuscany, are conducted into lagoni (little lakes), in which the acid condenses. The solution thus formed, after being concentrated by heat, is neutralized with sodium carbonate, and, on evaporation, yields crystals of borax. 

In 1812 Davy (V, 314 XI, iv, 232) said he had found that the element is more analogous to carbon than to any other substance and, since boracium implies a metal, he proposed Boron as a more unexceptionable name. .. Bore cannot with propriety be adopted in our language, though short and appropriate in the French nomenclature. He still used the name boracic acid .
