Achievability denial

The meaning of the psychiatric illness to the child and his or her family should be considered. Denial and confusion about the illness may not be expressed directly. Specific points for medication education include (J) the reasons for medications being used, (2) the goals of medication and when they might be achieved (3) the common side effects and when they will emerge (4) the rare side effects and when they might emerge (5) the activities, foods, drinks, and other medications that are contraindicated or require caution (6) recommended parental response to potential side effects and (7) duration of treatment (Kutcher, 1997). [Pg.400]

According to the Directive Art. 21 No. 2, a competent authority shall be appointed to achieve a rapid resolution of disputes arising between undertakings in connection with negotiations for third party access. Disputes on denial of access are especially mentioned. The authority shall be independent of the parties . Member States can make use of existing bodies, for instance, competition authorities or national courts.11 However, if the State in question is an important player in the gas market, the demand for impartiality indicates that the dispute authority shall be administratively independent of the state authorities. [Pg.315]

Catastrophic accidents occur only rarely. This means that most employees will not have actually experienced such an event. Ironically, this lack of direct experience can be a particular problem for those conducting hazards analyses at those facilities that have excellent safety and environmental records. Managers and workers in such organizations do not necessarily become complacent but they may become a little too comfortable and satisfied with what they have achieved. They have trouble thinking the unthinkable. Conversely, on those plants that have witnessed a serious accident within the last few years there can be no denial that such events happen. For example. Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) leaders will often hear remarks from highly experienced team members such as Tve been here 14 years, and I ve never seen that happen... with the unspoken implication, ... therefore it cannot happen. It is the job of the PHA leader to crack that shell of unjustified self-satisfaction. [Pg.150]

If self-determination and minorities were completely separate, the conditionality of human rights violations would be superfluous. The categorical denial of a connection between self-determination and minorities does not make sense. If there is no possibility for minorities to achieve any kind of self-determination, then what does the conditionality propose The cormection between minorities and self-determination may be weak under classic international law but it exists. Usually, there are two ways of refusing self-determination to minorities. Either self-determination is restricted solely to the context of decolonization or self-determination is not applicable because minorities are not peoples. Both of these arguments do not hold up at closer scrutiny. By using Franck s and Rawls approaches, the connection between minorities and self-determination becomes much more obvious. [Pg.213]

Chemical warfare serves several purposes - terrain denial, harrass-ment, attrition, sapping morale and weakening the enemy s effectiveness. It achieves its greatest effect when used as a weapon of surprise. Once chemical warfare becomes prolonged, troops rapidly adjust to it, as the experience of the First World War showed. The adoption of and familiarity with protective equipment can minimise the impact of a chemical attack, although protection carries its own penalties. [Pg.16]

Perhaps philosophers of chemistry have a role to play here. Unconstrained by what can presently be achieved, or even what might be achieved in the foreseeable future, one can point out the limitations of the current state of the art and one can place the research in the wider context of scientific reductionism in general and what it might mean for a calculation to be really ab initio. This is not a denial of the progress achieved in quantum chemistry or a reproach of the current work. It is more of an unrestrained look at what more could conceivably be done. Of course this might require a deeper theory than quantum mechanics or maybe a cleverer use of the existing theory. There is really no way of telling in advance. [Pg.163]
