Accidental unity

Natural —or natures —as the term is used here is not to be understood in the popular or ecological sense but as applied to those things in whom the principles for motion/change are immanent. Artifacts, on the other hand, ultimately have their principles located externally to them. Stated philosophically, an acorn has the immanent capacity to actualize its nature into a mature oak tree. ° A robot, which is technically termed an accidental unity, ultimately has its motion or change located (in the sense of explained) as external to it even a self-powered robot is not strictly...

Note that the antibody mimic is referred to by means of the diagram 3. In a sense this is because the diagram is a shorthand, but its perspicuity is not trivial or accidental as a picture that can be taken in at a glance, it offers schematically the whole configuration of the molecule in space. Its visual unity stands for, and does not misrepresent, the unity of the molecule s existence. 

The error in this term was estimated by various methods [40]. In one, the self-energy was scaled, E (e ) —> AE (e ), with A chosen to reproduce experimental removal energies. Although the values of A 0.8 thus obtained are quite different from unity, E pnc was found to vary by only a few tenths of a percent. This behavior could be traced to accidental cancellations between numerator and denominator contributions in the implicit sum over states (see next section) in the present approach. The cancellations are fortunate, however, because they imply that corrections to the many-body self-energy beyond second order play a reduced role in the PNC effect.
