The world s first long 500-/400-kV cable was installed in Canada by BC Hydro in 1984 [23,24-25]. This 500-kV AC submarine cable is a double-circuit line that connects Vancouver Island to mainland Canada through Texada Island. The distance between Vancouver Island and Texada Island is approximately 30 km the distance between Texada Island and mainland Canada is approximately 8 km. In between, the line has an overhead section on Texada Island. Shunt reactors totaling 1080 MVar were installed to compensate for the large charging capacity.
