Carbohydrates generally supply about 45% of our energy requirement. Dietary carbohydrates include monosaccharides (such as glucose and fructose), disaccharides (such as sucrose and lactose), and the longer hain oligo- and polysaccharides. (Polysaccharides with fewer than 15 monosaccharide units arc classed as oligosaccharides.) Dietary polysaccharides include starches, such as amyJose and amylopectin, and some of the dietary fibers.

The absorption of simple and complex carbohydrates from the intestine is mediated by a family of enzymes collectively named a-glucosidases which hydrolyze the oligo- or poly-saccharides to monosaccharides for transport into the blood stream. Inhibition of these enzymes is expected to delay the absorption of carbohydrates and reduce the postprandial glucose rise.
