Absence zonal

In the absence of K the enzyme exhibits a basal Mg -ATPase activity that can be reduced, but not completely removed, upon further purification of the enzyme by free-flow or zonal electrophoresis [66,89]. Wallmark et al. [104] demonstrated that the rate of spontaneous breakdown of phosphoenzyme corresponded very well to the Mg -ATPase activity at low ATP concentrations, implying that this activity was not due to a contaminating Mg -ATPase with a reaction path independent of the phosphoenzyme. This conclusion was confirmed by Reenstra et al. [129] in a study on the nonhyperbolic ATP dependence of ATPase activity and phosphoenzyme...

The method of zonal elution is one of the most common techniques used in affinity chromatography to examine biological interactions. An example of this type of experiment is shown in Fig. la. The results showed that the decrease in frequency and intensity of MBls since the mid-1970s and the complete absence of such events between February 1983 and January 1993 can probably be attributed to increased zonal circulation, resulting in both intensified precipitation in the Baltic region and increased river runoff (cf. also Schinke and Matthaus, 1998). These results were confirmed by model simulations carried out by Meier and Kauker (2003). 

We conclude from this result that the intensities of all the reflections hkO are zero for h odd. For each type and orientation of glide plane, there exist characteristic zonal absences (Table 3.2). 

The origin of the zonal absences lies in the periodicity of the projection of the structure onto the glide plane. The Fourier transform of the projection of the electron density down c onto the plane (001) is the set of structure factors F hk0) ... 

A zonal absence indicates that a projection of the structure onto a plane has a different periodicity from that of the three-dimensional structure. It is in general due to the presence of a glide plane.
