All these 3,4-dihydro-2H-1 -benzopyran-2-ones 17 and 18 are substrates of class A and class C (3-lactamases. They are thus the first 8-lactones that are hydrolyzed by [3-lactamases. The kcat values for these substrates are generally smaller than those of the analogous acyclic phenaceturates suggesting that the tethered leaving group obstructs the attack of water on the acyl-enzyme. Despite the apparent advantage of the long-lived acyl-enzymes, the irreversible inhibition by the functionalized compounds is no better than that of acyclic molecules 16. Thus, even the tethered QM cannot efficiently trap a second nucleophile at the [3-lactamase active site, at least as placed as dictated by the structure of compounds 18.70... [Pg.374]

Photoinduced, spontaneous aggregation processes have been shown to occur when indolinobenzopyrans are irradiated in aliphatic solvents. The aggregates which are globular in appearance, consist of submicron cores of crystalline materials with an amorphous exterior and are termed "quasicrystals" (L-3). Spectroscopic studies by Krongauz and coworkers (1) indicate that the composition of the cores are AnB (n=2,3) and the amorphous exteriors AB. The most stable quasicrystals have been derived from 1-(/ -metha-crolyloxyethyl)-3,3 dimethyl-61-nitrospiro- (indoline-2,2 —[2H-1 ] benzopyran (SP-A) and its associated merocyanine form (SP-B). [Pg.135]

All of the compounds discussed are based on three molecules 2/f-pyran (1), 4//-pyran (2) and the pyrylium cation (3). Names which have been used for the benzologue (4) of 2//-pyran include 2H- 1-benzopyran, benzo-a-pyran, chrom-3-ene and 2//-chromene. A similar situation exists for the corresponding derivative (5) of 4/f-pyran. The unambiguous and simplest name chromene is used in the present work. The benzologue (6) of pyrylium is known both as benzopyrylium and chromylium the former name is preferred here. Higher benzologues are referred to as naphthopyrans, such as 2H-naphtho[ 1,2-6 jpyran (7), but the names xanthene and xanthylium are used for (8) and (9). [Pg.574]

The simple pyrans are rather unstable compounds and of little biological or industrial significance but some of their benzo derivatives are of considerable interest. Many 2H-1-benzopyrans (chromenes) are found in plants, for example evodionol (126), lapachenole (127), lonchocarpin (128), rottlerine (129) and edulan (130). A few of the constituents of marijuana (hashish) belong to this class, for example cannabinol (131). [Pg.665]
