Zirconium physical properties

Alkaline-Earth Titanates. Some physical properties of representative alkaline-earth titanates ate Hsted in Table 15. The most important apphcations of these titanates are in the manufacture of electronic components (109). The most important member of the class is barium titanate, BaTi03, which owes its significance to its exceptionally high dielectric constant and its piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. Further, because barium titanate easily forms solid solutions with strontium titanate, lead titanate, zirconium oxide, and tin oxide, the electrical properties can be modified within wide limits. Barium titanate may be made by, eg, cocalcination of barium carbonate and titanium dioxide at ca 1200°C. With the exception of Ba2Ti04, barium orthotitanate, titanates do not contain discrete TiO ions but ate mixed oxides. Ba2Ti04 has the P-K SO stmcture in which distorted tetrahedral TiO ions occur. [Pg.127]

Zirconium is a hard, shiny, ductile metal, similar to stainless steel in appearance. It can be hot-worked to form slabs, rods, and rounds from arc-melted ingot. Further cold-working of zirconium with intermediate annealings produces sheet, foil, bar wire, and tubing. Physical properties are given in Table 3. [Pg.427]

Above 40 wt % hydrogen content at room temperature, zirconium hydride is brittle, ie, has no tensile ductiHty, and it becomes more friable with increasing hydrogen content. This behavior and the reversibiHty of the hydride reaction are utilized ki preparing zirconium alloy powders for powder metallurgy purposes by the hydride—dehydride process. The mechanical and physical properties of zirconium hydride, and thek variation with hydrogen content of the hydride, are reviewed in Reference 127. [Pg.433]

The physical properties of zirconium tetrafluoride ate Hsted in Table 7. [Pg.435]

Zirconium tetrachloride is a tetrahedral monomer in the gas phase, but the soHd is a polymer of ZrCl octahedra arranged in zigzag chains in such a way that each zirconium has two pairs of bridging chlorine anions and two terminal or t-chlorine anions. The octahedra are distorted with unequal Zr—Cl bridge bonds of 0.2498 and 0.2655 nm. The physical properties of zirconium tetrachloride are given in Table 7. [Pg.435]

Zirconium tetrabromide [13777-25-8] ZrBr, is prepared direcdy from the elements or by the reaction of bromine on a mixture of zirconium oxide and carbon. It may also be made by halogen exchange between the tetrachloride and aluminum bromide. The physical properties are given in Table 7. The chemical behavior is similar to that of the tetrachloride. [Pg.436]

Zirconium tetraiodide [13986-26-0], Zrl, is prepared directly from the elements, by the reaction of iodine on zirconium carbide, or by halogen exchange with aluminum triiodide. The reaction of iodine with zirconium oxide and carbon does not proceed. The physical properties are given in Table 7. [Pg.436]

The physical properties of ZrC are Hsted in Table 2. Zirconium carbide is much less important than TiC for cemented carbides. [Pg.452]

Copper. The physical properties of pure copper are given in Table 11. The mechanical properties of pure copper are essentially the same as those for ClOl and CllO. The coppers represent a series of alloys ranging from the commercially pure copper, ClOl, to the dispersion hardened alloy C157. The difference within this series is the specification of small additions of phosphoms, arsenic, cadmium, tellurium, sulfur, zirconium, as well as oxygen. To be classified as one of the coppers, the alloy must contain at least 99.3% copper. [Pg.229]

The physical properties of unalloyed zirconium are recorded in Table 5.17. [Pg.883]

The coordination chemistry of zirconium(III) is an ill-defined and relatively unexplored area.19 Only one magnetically dilute zirconium(III) complex has been isolated, [ZrCl3(tfars)]-MeCN [tfars= 1, 2-bis(dimethylarsino)-3,3,4,4-tetrafluorocyclobutene (CFZ)2C2-(AsMe2)2]2° and the first structurally characterized zirconium(III) complex [ ZrCl3(PBu3)2 2] has just recently been reported.21 The known zirconium(III) complexes and their physical properties are listed in Table 2. Even less is known about the coordination chemistry of hafnium(III). Just one complex, HfCl3(py)4, has been reported.22... [Pg.366]

Physical Properties. Hafnium is a hard, heavy, somewhat ductile metal having an appearance slightly darker than that of stainless steel. The color of hafnium sponge metal is a dull powder gray. Physical properties of hafnium are summarized in Table 1. These data are for commercially pure hafnium which may contain from 0.2 to 3% zirconium. Although a number of radioactive isotopes have been artificially produced, naturally occurring hafnium consists of six stable isotopes (Table 2). Hafnium crystallizes in a body-centered cubic system which transforms to a hexagonal close-packed system below 2033 K. [Pg.439]

Synthesis, reactions, and physical properties of stable mononuclear platinum and zirconium complexes of cyclohexyne reported prior to the late 1980s have been comprehensively covered in earlier reviews.2-8 More recently, reaction of the zirconocene complex of cyclohexyne with trimethyla-luminum and trimethylgallium has been reported to give 247 and 248, respectively [Eq. (36)].57-58 These products are novel because four atoms (carbons Cl and C3, the transition metal, and the main group metal) are covalently bonded to an sp2 hybridized carbon (C2) in a planar tetracoordi-nate fashion. Synthesis of this type of complex, which Erker describes as anti-van t Hoff/LeBel, does not require the strained cycloalkyne ring zirconocene complexes of acyclic alkynes react similarly.57-58... [Pg.189]
