Ziprasidone, drug interactions

Hypersensitivity to the drug or any other component of the product (cross-sensitivity between phenothiazines may occur) comatose or greatly depressed states caused by CNS depressants or from any other cause (phenothiazines, clozapine, loxapine, molindone, pimozide, haloperidol) coadministration with other drugs that prolong the QT interval and in patients with congenital long QT syndrome or history of cardiac arrhythmias (mesoridazine, thioridazine, pimozide, ziprasidone see Drug..Interactions).

A comprehensive review article on tiie treatment of Hxmtington s disease evaluated the data on different antipsy-chotics (aripiprazole, clozapine, haloperidol, olanzapine, pimozide, risperidone, quetiapine, ziprasidone) and summarised the main side effects and drug interactions [25 ]. 

Antipsychotics produce more important pharmacodynamic than pharmacokinetic interactions because of their multiple effects. Additive effects may occur when these drugs are combined with others that have sedative effects, a-adrenoceptor-blocking action, anticholinergic effects, and—for thioridazine and ziprasidone—quinidine-like action. 

The manufacturers warn of the possible risks of giving ziprasidone with drugs that prolong the QT interval, and of the possible antagonism that may occur with ievodopa and other dopamine agonists. Ziprasidone appears not to interact to a clinically relevant extent with an aiuminium/magnesium hydroxide antacid, benzatropine, cimetidine, iorazepam, propranolol or tobacco smoking.
