Ziegler-Natta catalysts, polyolefin

Since the discovery of Ziegler-Natta catalysts, polyolefin industries have been developed mainly by using titanium-based catalysts. However, after the appearance of metallocene catalysts, much emphasis has been placed on those based on zirconium owing to the superiority of their performance over titano-cene catalysts. [Pg.90]

A characteristic of polyolefins synthesized with metallocene catalysts is their significantly lower polydispersity compared to one obtained by using heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts. Such narrower molecular mass distributions can lead to different mechanical properties of the resulting material. [Pg.48]

Catalloy A gas-phase process for making olefin co-polymers, using Ziegler-Natta catalysts. It uses a series of three gas-phase reactors to which monomer is progressively added. The properties of the product can be varied according to the monomer grades used. Developed by Himont and first commercialized in 1990. Now operated by a joint venture of Montell Polyolefins and Japan Polyolefins. See also Hivalloy. [Pg.53]

Hivalloy A process for grafting styrenic polymers on to polyolefines, using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst. The products combine the physical properties of both polymer types. Developed by Montell and commercialized in the United States in 1997. See also Catalloy. Oxley, D. F., Chem. Ind. (London), 1998, (8), 307. [Pg.129]

Synthesis of Living Polyolefins with Soluble Ziegler-Natta Catalysts and Application to Block Copolymerization... [Pg.201]

The first example of Iiving polyolefin with a uniform chain length was found in the low-temperature polymerization of propylene with the soluble catalyst composed of V(acac)3 and Al(C1Hi)2Cl. The mechanism of the living coordination polymerization is discussed on the basis of the kinetic and stereochemical data. Subsequently, some applications of living polypropylene are introduced to prepare tailor-made polymers such as terminally functionalized polymers and block copolymers which exhibit new characteristic properties. Finally, new types of soluble Ziegler-Natta catalysts are briefly surveyed in connection with the synthesis of living polyolefins. [Pg.201]

In conclusion, we indicate the future trends of research and development in the field of soluble Ziegler-Natta catalysts for the synthesis of living polyolefins and block copolymers. [Pg.201]

The first example of a living polyolefin with a uniform chain length was disclosed in 1979 by Doi, Ueki and Keii 47,48) who used the soluble Ziegler-Natta catalyst composed of V(acac)3 (acac = acetylacetonate anion) and A1(C2H5)2C1 for the polymerization of propylene. In this review, we deal with the kinetics and mechanism of living coordination polymerization of a-olefins with soluble Ziegler-Natta catalysts and the synthesis of well-defined block copolymers by the use of living polyolefins. [Pg.204]

The coordination polymerization of ethylene and a-olefins with Ziegler-Natta catalysts involves, in general, many elementary reactions, such as initiation (formation of active centers), chain propagation, chain transfers and chain terminations. The length of growing polyolefin chains is limited by the chain-terminating processes, as schematically represented (for ethylene) by 21,49 51)... [Pg.204]
