After laying the foundation for the first edition, Erich Ziegler has been able to pass on the editorship within the family, sharing his ongoing passion for the world of flavours. This 2 edition had initially been scheduled as homage on the occasion of his 80 birthday in 2005, a target the large pool of authors could, however, not fulfil completely. [Pg.836]

Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems being mostly heterogeneous in nature, adsorption reactions are most likely to occur in such polymerizations and feature in their kinetic schemes (Erich and Mark, 1956). A number of kinetic schemes have thus been proposed based on the assumption that the polymerization centers are formed by the adsorption of metal alkyl species on to the surface of a crystalline transition metal halide and that chain propagation occurs between the adsorbed metal alkyl and monomer. Another, more complex, method for the concentration of citrus oils is a chromatographic separation using packed columns. This method allows a complete elimination of the unwanted hydrocar bons. This method, invented by Erich Ziegler, uses columns packed with either silica or aluminum oxide. The oil is introduced onto the column and the hydrocarbons eluted by means of a suitable nonpolar solvent of very low boiling point. The desirable polar citrus oil components are then washed out using a polar solvent (Ziegler, 1982). [Pg.158]
