The latest plant with a capacity of 660,000 tpy for Zhejiang Hualian Sunshine Petro-Chemical Co. Ltd. in Shaoxing, China, is under construction and will be started up in April 2005, increasing the worldwide capacity to 2.1 million tpy. 

In 1987 he received, together with Hansjorg Sinn, the European Research Prize for the development of the Hamburg process for pyrolysis of polymers. In 1997 he received the Carothers Award of the American Chemical Society (Delaware Section), and in the same year the Walter Ahlstrom Prize in Helsinki, Finland. Since 1998 he has been an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry in London, and Honorary Professor of the Zhejiang University in China. In 1999 he received the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Chemistry, Philadelphia and in 2003 the Hermann Staudinger Prize of the German Chemical Society (GDCh).

Skygreen is a product of SK Chemicals (North Korea) and is obtained by polycondensation of 1,2-ethanediol and 1,4-butanediol with sueoinie and adipic acids. Nippon Shokubai (Japan), IieChem (North Korea) and Zhejiang Hangzhou Xinfu (China) also market an ahphatic copolyester under the respeetive names Lunare SE , EnPol and Bioeosafe . The properties of these (eo)polyesters depend on their structures and maeromoleeular architectures. 

Figure 9.4 and Table 9.1 respectively show the chemical structure and the properties of these materials. Most commonly used is poly(butylene adipate-co-terephtalate) (PBAT). BASF, DuPont and Zhejiang Hangzhou Xinfu (China) manufacture and market these aromatic polyesters, under the respective brands Ecoflex , Biomax and Biocosafe . Biomax has a high terephthalic acid content, which modifies some of its properties such as the melting temperature (200°C). According to Muller et al., an increase in terephthalic acid content tends to decrease the rate of biodegradation into compost [MUL 97].
