This section started with the discovery of Soddy and Fajans on radioactive decay around 1910 and the relationship of radioactive decay to the periodic table. At this point in the history, we understand the periodic table and we understand the role of isotopes in the periodic table. We have not yet understood the structure of the modern Table, i.e. first row two elements, second row eight elements, etc. That understanding can be based on Bohr theory of the hydrogen atom originally developed in 1911 and is summarized in Bohr s famous article in Zeitschrift fur Physik (Bohr 1922). [Pg.24]

Until 1986 many experiments were carried out using metals and alloys. However, in 1986 Georg Bednorz and Alex Muller, two researchers of the IBM laboratory in Ruschlikon near Zurich, published an article in the Zeitschrift fur Physik in which they announced that they had made a superconducting ceramic material. It turned out to be a compound made of barium, copper, lanthanum and oxygen, which became superconducting at 35 K. They were awarded the Nobel prize for this discovery. After this, superconductors developed rapidly, at least as far as critical temperature is concerned. [Pg.235]

In 1928 Bonino had opened the March 31 issue of Nature and read about the Raman effect for the first time. Soon afterward, he ended his long series of papers on infrared spectra by publishing two articles that dealt with the new Raman spectroscopy. So, when Miiller and Bednorz s report came out in Zeitschrift fur Physik, Japanese physicists not only saw the obscure German journal, but read it very carefully. At first, there was a touch of skepticism, but just a touch. One specialist in superconductors, Koichi Kitazawa, a member of Shoji Tanaka s team at Tokyo University, was not immediately impressed he tossed it off to a graduate student in physics who had asked for permission to repeat the IBM scientists experiment, as one account of the incident had it, and make a joke of it. By November 1986, the Japanese weren t laughing they had done the Meissner test, and the ceramic responded magnetically, confirmation that the Miiller-Bednorz discovery was no fluke. [Pg.53]
