In contrast to the work quoted above, we studied not only the adsorption of molecules from the gas phase (for porous glass as adsorbent), but also from their solutions in CC14 (for silicagel and alumo-silicagei). Some preliminary experiments in that direction have been made with porous glass by V. Baikov in 1954. His data are reproduced in parentheses in Table I. 

One further complication concerning the origin of selectivity changes during structural isomerization reactions has been indicated by the work of Kramer and Zuegg.352 They observed that the percentage of n-hexane produced from methyl cyclopentane increases with the amount of interface between Pt and the support. They propose that isomerization occurs by two parallel routes, one on the metal the other at the metal/oxide interface. Such effects, if confirmed, should be more important for small metal particles, and may have influenced the selectivity observed in the other work quoted above. 

Commonly used polynomials are the cubic56-58 and, most usually, the quartic.29 30-30 59-76 The quartic has the advantage that it gives analytical expressions for the most commonly recorded constants, toe, x0a>c, Be, o. Probably a high proportion of the work quoting a Dunham analysis uses this function too. 

The observed Tgs of the polystyrene microphases in all of the work quoted above (1,2,3,4,5) were lower than those expected for polystyrene homopolymers having the same molecular weights as the blocks in the block copolymers. We present a detailed comparison of such data below. 

Yu (unpublished work quoted by Yu, 1974) found that, as would be expected, there was no sign of conformational change for lysozyme, as revealed by the Raman spectrum, as the pH was decreased from 5.2 to 2.0. In particular, there was virtually no change in the amide III backbone region (1220—1300 cm ). On the other hand, there were changes in amide III frequencies and the contour of Raman bands for a-lactalbumin upon the same reduction in pH value.

In contrast to the work quoted so far, Strube and Diinnebier applied a different approach by optimizing elution chromatography using cut strategy II. Strube uses a transport-dispersive model for his simulation studies and optimized the productivity... 

The Mg, Si, Fe and Ni abundances are heavily depleted with respect to the Sun (indicating the presence of grains intimately mixed with the gas phase in the ionized region). There is actually a controversy with respect to the interpretation of Fe lines (Bautista et al. 1994, Baldwin et al. 1996, Bautista Pradhan 1998). Esteban et al. (1999a) recommend to derive Fe abundances from Fe++ lines as done in the works quoted in Table 2. 

The problem, in the view of the present authors, is that the partial current density for deposition of, say, nickel is determined from the total amount of nickel deposited per unit time. However, in a solution containing Ni , Mo04 , NH3 and Cit , there can be as many as nine different species from which nickel could be deposited (six complexes with 1-6 molecules of NH3, two with citrate, and one adsorbed mixed-metal complex). The reversible potential for deposition of nickel is, in principle, different for each complex (depending on the stability constants). Hence, although all these parallel paths occur at the same applied potential, the overpotential is different for each of them. Moreover, there is no basis to assume that the exchange current densities or the Tafel slopes would be the same. If the observed Tafel plot would, nevertheless, be linear over at least two decades of current density, it could be argued that one of these parallel paths for deposition of nickel happens to be predominant. However, in the work quoted here, the apparent linearity of the Tafel plots extends only over a factor of about three in current density, namely over half a decade (cf.. Fig. 4a in Ref. 97). 

By group theory, all modes in a lattice belonging to the same species in a lattice interact (while those of different species are uncoupled) so that if a mode on a neighbouring star will be coupled to the impurity-electron, modes of the same species on more distant stars will be coupled, too. In the works quoted a set of coupled equations of motion was derived for the modes, using relatively simple models for the couplings between atoms. Disturbances that originate near the impurity decrease in amplitude as they spread outwards their behaviour as function of the distance of the star from the impurity will be discussed in Sect. 4.4.3.
