The precise configuration can be chosen according to the laboratory workload. Table 2.2 clearly illustrates the capacities of the various models. These instruments will support a wide range of analytical methods including end-point assays at one or two wavelengths and with one or two steps as well as rate analyses. [Pg.31]

Taylor and colleagues [98] at the Mayo Clinic published a method for the simultaneous analysis of urinary cortisol and cortisone. They used 2H4 cortisol as an internal standard and took a 0.5-ml urine sample. An API 2000 with Turboion-spray source was used in the positive-ion mode. Chromatography was conducted on a standard-bore C18 column with Q8 precolumn filter. MRM was conducted in the positive-ion mode monitoring m/z 363—>121 for cortisol, 367—>121 for 2TL, cortisol, and 361— -121 for cortisone. Cortisol and cortisone were separated and both were eluted within 2 min. Inter- and intra-assay variation for both compounds was < 9% for amounts above 2 pig/dl. The values obtained agree well with those of other studies, such as ours (Table 5.3.2) [62]. They found a range for cortisol for adult males of 4.2-60 pg/24 h and for adult females 3.0-43 pg/24 h. In summary, the 3-min run time of their method has allowed the Mayo group to completely transfer their cortisol and cortisone workload from RIA and HPLC to MS/MS. [Pg.561]

Beta antagonists are generally administered for their effect on the beta-1 receptors that are located on the heart.31 When stimulated, these receptors mediate an increase in cardiac contractility and rate of contraction. By blocking these receptors, beta antagonists reduce the rate and force of myocardial contractions. Consequently, beta antagonists are frequently used to decrease cardiac workload in conditions such as hypertension and certain types of angina pectoris. Beta blockers may also be used to normalize heart rate in certain forms of cardiac arrhythmias. Specific clinical applications of individual beta blockers are summarized in Table 20-2. [Pg.281]

A slightly more complex HPLC analysis of oral contraceptive tablets for content uniformity has been described [65]. The analysis was automated because it represented a high proportion of the laboratory workload, it was relatively routine, and it would reduce contact with steroids, therefore minimizing health risks. The last point was emphasized by placing the robotic system in a room separate from the main laboratory, with the controller outside the room. This is significantly different from the approach followed by many users of laboratory robotics, who often place the system in a main laboratory area. In other words, transport is saturable. Under low workload conditions, where the rate of glucose utilization was about half that at high workloads, glucose content was decreased. There are several planning functions precede the actual retrieval of products for customer orders. The first of these is to check current inventory levels in the forward pick areas and generate replenishment reports. Most warehouse operators prefer to replenish at the beginning of the shift, for reasons of safety and efficiency. Some replenishments may occur during the pick process, especially if the information about orders is incomplete, or if operators select full cartons from the item pick area when they should be selected from the carton pick area. The WMS should support workload balancing in the pick operation reflect different picker capabilities according to data in the personnel master (Table 10), and reflect different number of operators according to pick wave and shift. The abdity to balance workload over more than one day is desirable, but it is usually not available in the typical WMS. [Pg.2104]

In contrast, the correlation results provided mixed support for the validity of the PCA components. The within-task correlations indicated that only the parasympathetic component was valid (Table 7.4). However, the within-task correlations are not as important to the conclusions about the validity of the PCA components for the purpose of mental workload assessment as are the within-subject correlations. Because mental workload will typically be assessed within an individual (e.g., a pilot), the psychological-physiological relation need only hold within that individual. The correlation between the sympathetic component and PEP across subjects (within a task) is much less important than the correlation within subjects. Therefore, the correlation results support the validity of the PCA method when viewed fk>m the perspective of whether the PCA components would be valuable for mental workload assessment. [Pg.173]

An obvious explanation for the stress-inducing effects of short SRTs as foimd by our group is the increase in workload due to higher work density, which is in accordance with elevated cardiorespiratory achvity (top of the third and fourth columns of Table 14.1). However, since increased cardiorespiratory activity can be regarded as a main marker variable for physical strain (Boucsein, 1993), it should be verified that our results were not mediated by an increased amount of physical activity required under short as compared to long SRTs. [Pg.296]
