Working Time Regulations

The health and safety of employees can be affected by the number of hours they work at a stretch and the number of days they work vdthout a rest day. This has been the subject of an EU directive, no 93/104/EC The Working Time Directive , which is incorporated into UK law through The Working Time Regulations 1998. 

The originating EU directive has been amended extending the cover to all non-mobile workers with a phased application to junior doctors. The Working Time Regulations are due to be amended to incorporate these EU changes. 

The Working Time Regulations 1998 (WTR), which derive from EU directive no. 93/104/EC, provide for a maximum working week of 48 hours.

The purpose of this checklist is to gather together the information required to make a detailed assessment of compliance with the Working Time Regulations. In support of this endeavor the regulations also provide a sample health questionnaire for those about to embark on night work (or already engaged in it), which is reproduced below.
