Word recognition tests

Paradoxically, one of the most reliable indications of recovery is the return of awareness by the subject that he is not as proficient as he should be. Subjects who receive an incapacitating dose usually regain this awareness by the third or fourth day. By this time, their objective performance on addition and word recognition tests has generally risen to 80 or 90 percent of their baseline level, and the principal symptoms are some residual lassitude and blurring of vision..

The test results were similar to what would be expected from a healthy, well-developing U.S. population. No test indicated a deleterious effect of methylmercury from the exposure levels received in this population. 

Twelve healthy volunteers were tested in a placebo-controlled double-blind crossover study to assess the effects of oxazepam and a standardized extract of kava rhizome (WS1490) on behavior and event-related potentials (ERPs) in a word recognition task. 

A quite different approach focuses on word recognition and tests of this type are perhaps the most common sort of intelligibility test. Here listeners are played words either in isolation or in sentences and asked which word(s) they have heard. One group of tests plays listeners similar words and asks them to make distinctions. The most commonly used test is perhaps the modified rhyme test (MRT) [221]. In this test, listeners are played a set of 50 groups 6 words each. The words in each group are similar and differ in only one consonant and the users are asked to record which word they have heard on a multiple choice sheet. A typical set of words might be BAD BAC K... 

Intelligibility testing is often performed with the modified rhyme test or semantically unpredictable sentences. While these give a measure of word recognition, care should be taken when using results from these tests to indicate performance in applications, naturalness is normally measured by mean opinion scores (MOS). 

On the next page are some of the word elements seen most often in vocabulary tests. Simply reading them and their examples for five to ten minutes a day will give you the quick recognition you need to make a good association with the meaning of an unfamiliar word. 

This brings us to the related question of the difference between recall and recognition, in word learning experiments, a subject can be tested for his recall of words, i.e., the words that he can remember on demand or for recognition, wherein he is given a list some of which were words to be learned.
