Wool yellow

The flavone morin (700) (Natural Yellow C.I. 75660) dyes wool yellow, the actual shade being determined by the mordant which is used. It has also been mentioned as a spot test reagent for salts of aluminum, beryllium, zinc and other metals (B-54MI22401).

Oxygen plays an essential role in the yellowing of wool [1578]. Irradiation of dry wool in the absence of oxygen produces a green coloration, probably due to the formation of thiyl free radicals. On exposure to atmospheric oxygen these radicals decay, and the green colour of the wool turns to yellow [1324]. The presence of water vapour enhances yellowing thus wet wool yellows much more rapidly than dry wool [1488]. 

The most widely accepted theory of wool yellowing proposes the photooxidation of the tryptophan groups (4.130) to yellow coloured N-formyl-kynurenine (4.133) and kynurenine (4.134) [964, 1576] ...
