Wiechert, Emil

With the nineteenth-century development of the seismograph, studies of the Earth s interior and core accelerated rapidly. In 1897 Emil Wiechert subdivided the Earth s interior into two main layers a silicate shell surrounding a metallic core, with the core beginning at 1,400 km depth. This was the first modem model of the Earth s internal stracture, which is now confirmed widely by many... [Pg.1246]

Johnston Stoney first proposed the existence and name for the electron in 1891, although he did not beheve that it existed as a firee particle. Several researchers discovered the physical electron, including Emil Wiechert in Koningsberg, who was... [Pg.183]

Since the fundamental work of Hans Benndorf (1870-1953) and Emil Wiechert (1861-1921) during the first decade of the twentieth century, it is known that in the case of a body wave, there is a direct relation between the observed (apparent) propagation velocity of a seismic wave, the ray parameter (the derivative of the travel-time curve), and the seismic velocity at the turning point of the observed seismic wave within the Earth. With an array of seismometers, this (apparent) velocity can be directly measured as long as all sensors are located in one horizontal plane. [Pg.3214]
