Why Benchmark the Research Competitiveness of U.S. Chemistry Now

The National Academies is periodically asked to assess the effectiveness of research investments in addressing national concerns. Research investments in turn affect the quality of research done. In 2000 the National Academies explored a new way of evaluating research leadership status through an international benchmarking exercise1 which compares the quality and impact of research in one country (or region) with world standards of excellence. [Pg.7]
