Schindler (1977) used evidence from whole-lake experiments to show convincingly the phosphorus limitation in lakes he also demonstrated that natural mechanisms compensated for nitrogen and carbon deficiencies in eutrophied lakes. In experimentally fertilized lakes, the invasion of atmospheric carbon dioxide supplied enough carbon to support and maintain phytoplankton populations proportional to P concentrations over a wide range of values. There was a strong tendency in every case for lakes to correct carbon deficiencies—obviously the rate of CO2 supply from the atmosphere was sufficiently fast—... [Pg.891]

These results suggest that renin is an enzyme-like substance which is activated by a kinase-like material contained in the protein fraction of plasma and whole blood. And later they (107) wrote These experiments. .. therefore suggest that either whole blood, plasma, or filtrate of laked erythrocytes activates the vasoconstrictor action of renin, or that a latent vasoconstrictor substance in blood is activated by renin. ... [Pg.520]
