Schindler (1977) used evidence from whole-lake experiments to show convincingly the phosphorus limitation in lakes he also demonstrated that natural mechanisms compensated for nitrogen and carbon deficiencies in eutrophied lakes. In experimentally fertilized lakes, the invasion of atmospheric carbon dioxide supplied enough carbon to support and maintain phytoplankton populations proportional to P concentrations over a wide range of values. There was a strong tendency in every case for lakes to correct carbon deficiencies—obviously the rate of CO2 supply from the atmosphere was sufficiently fast—...

It is very difficult to make experimental tests of the hypothesis that net marine ecosystem production is N fimited, in the same way as the lake ecosystem P hmitation hypothesis has been tested through whole lake fertilization experiments...

These results suggest that renin is an enzyme-like substance which is activated by a kinase-like material contained in the protein fraction of plasma and whole blood.
