Let us consider white-sidewall tires. These are formed by placing a layer of white rubber over a carcass of dark rubber. Under normal conditions, molecules of color in the carcass migrate and bleed through to stain the white-sidewall. This staining can be prevented by incorporating activated carbon in carcass rubber. Then the colored molecules will migrate only until they reach a particle of activated carbon, whereupon they become adsorbed and anchored.

There are two forms of titanium dioxide used in rubber anatas and rutile types that differ in crystalhne structure. An anatase-type titanium oxide pigmented vulcanizate can have an outstanding (bluish) white color, while most rutile titanium dioxides give a cream-colored white rubber vulcanizate. However, rutile types have 20 percent more covering power than do anatas types. Also, rutile types give the more fight- and weather-resistant vulcanizates. Nevertheless, anatas types are used where a more nearly pure white material is required.

The objective of this laboratory study was to evaluate several new antioxidants versus two control antioxidants in a natural rubber/polybutadiene-based white rubber compound.
