During the period 1992-1995 world wheat production averaged 544 million tons/ year, while the com production figure was 514 million tons/year.18 However, in 

2004-2007 world corn production increased to 721 million tons (see Chapters 2 and 9) compared to 611 million tons of wheat19 (Table 10.1). World production of other cereals in 2004-2007 was rice 415 million tons, barley 140 million tons, sorghum 59 million tons, oat 25 million tons and rye 15 million tons.20 The sharp increase in corn production is attributable to its recent use for fuel ethanol. Currently three-fourths of world wheat production occurs in Europe, Far East Asia, and North and Central America.
