Toilet repair

The first skill that a new homeowner should acquire is toilet repair. 1 had my first lesson on this vital skill in 1969. We had just moved into our first house in south Chicago when 1 discovered our toilet wouldn t flush. An experienced co-worker at the American Oil Refinery in Whiting, Indiana (now BP), suggested that 1 check the roof vent (see Fig. 1.2). 

Over one weekend, Julio s school is badly flooded. Someone broke in and, after putting the plugs in all the washbasins in the upstairs toilets, they turned all the taps on. The overflowing water ruined carpets on both floors and caused large parts of the ground floor ceiling to collapse. Several televisions, some musical instruments and a lot of computer equipment were ruined. The repairs to the school are very expensive. A week later Julio discovers who caused all the damage and the vandals find out that he knows about them.

Bladder neck reconstruction is undertaken at the age of 4-5 years, where it can be expected that the child can cooperate actively with toilet training. A prerequisite for bladder neck repair is a bladder capacity of more than 60 ml (Ben-Chaim et al. 1996). Since nearly all patients suffer from VUR,new ureteral implantation must also be done. Afterwards muscle flaps are created from the mid-trigone to the prostatic urethra, and these flaps are closed over a catheter in order to produce a bladder neck. In cases where the bladder neck is wide open or continence is inadequate, submucosal injection of Teflon, collagen, or silicone microspheres can be an alternative treatment choice (Kelly 1998). 

Traditionally councils do not step across the homeowner s boundary and any infrastructure issues between the house and the front boundary is the home-owner s problem. But [due to demand] postearthquake it would have been impossible to just call a plumber to get the issue fixed. So we [Waimakariri District Council] made a decision fairly early on to liaise with [and secure funding from] the Earthquake Commission and comdinate repairs across the boundary because there s no point us fixing our side of the sewer and people still not being able to use [the toilet] because the pipe between the house and the houndary is broken (italics added). 

When there is damage to the wastewater network (pipes or treatment facility), there will likely be sewage-contaminated materials to manage both during the repair work and from residents immediately after the event who may not have access to a toilet. Public health protection for workers and general public during collection and disposal must be managed appropriately.
