Weight platforms

As in the construction industry, piling of the conductor is done by dropping weights onto the pipe or using a hydraulic hammer until no further penetration occurs. In an offshore environment the conductor is either piled (e.g. on a platform) or a large diameter hole is actually drilled, into which the conductor is lowered and cemented. Once the drill bit has drilled below the conductor the well is said to have been spudded.

Production platforms are coated only in exceptional cases or for the purposes of investigation because the life of the structure is greater than the life of the coating. Therefore in the design of the cathodic protection, only the protection potential Us of the steel need be considered. Steels with an ultimate tensile strength of up to 350 N mm are used for these structures, which are weldable even in thick sections, and the hardness of the welded material can be kept to 350 HV (see Section 2.3.4 [2,10]). Aluminum anodes with the same protection effect and life as zinc anodes have much less weight. This is a very important advantage for... 

Nodal points of the platform require special attention for corrosion protection. Therefore the anodes have to be installed in the vicinity of these points, as indicated in Fig. 16-4. The spacing must be sufficiently large that the welded Joints of the nodes do not lie in the area of the lap Joints. The effort for calculating the optimal distribution with the lowest weight of anodes is considerable and has led to computer programs by which the anode distribution can be estimated [11]. 

Pressure storage tanks should be coirelated using /lb vs. w eight, much the same as other pressure vessels. Materials of construction, of course, would be another variable. Special internals, insulation, and internal heat exchangers should again be separated from the base cost of the tank. This calculation should yield a practicable number of anodes, i.e. 10 or 10000 anodes are both clearly unacceptable for the protection of an offshore oil production platform. N X M must be equal to, or greater than, the total weight of anode material, W, required. 

Off-shore gas liquefaction of natural gas on oil platforms is often mentioned as an example of on-site production [5]. Natural gas today is flared as its transportation is not economic. Conversion on-site by conventional reactors suffers from the large weight of the equipment. Gavriilidis et al. state that 5 kg of support are needed to support 1 kg of equipment on an oil platform ]5]. light-weight micro reactors have the potential to use the precious area of the platforms better (Figure 1.26).
