Weight per unit length

Linear Density. Linear density is defined as the weight per unit length (usually defined as denier), weight in grams of 9000 m or Tex, gram weight of 1000 m of yam or cord (26). Tex is often used as dTex (Tex x 10) and is related to denier because dTex = denier x 1.111.

This enables measurement of the running die swell.

Evenness testing n. Determination of the variation in weight per unit length and thickness of yarns or fibers aggregates such as roving, sliver, or top. 

Total denier n. The denier of a tow before it is crimped. It is the product of the denier per filament and the number of filaments in the tow. The total denier after crimping (called crimped total denier) is higher because of the resultant increase in weight per unit length.

There is no formal classification. However, carbon fiber yarn is sometimes judged by linear density, which is weight per unit length, or rated by number of filaments/ yarn count. Carbon fibers are rated by their measured modufus in GPa.
